It’s exciting to start a business on your own – but it’s always easier to have a helping hand! When you start a career you have to face a lot of challenges, problems, and hurdles in the way of success, to tackle the hurdles successfully you need a mentor. A mentor is a supporting ladder to reach your final destination especially in the initial stages of your startup on which the future of your business depends.

There are a number of examples of great leaders who took help from mentors like Steve Jobs had Bill Campbell; Bill Gates had Warren Buffett as a mentor. You can also find mentors featuring in the reality shows from X-Factor to The Apprentice. What is a mentor? In your personal life, you may have benefited from a mentor type relationship without being aware of it. A mentor is an experienced and trusted figure providing guidance to the mentees. A mentor is the one who can guide you from their past experience and can save you from a major loss in your business. As productivity consultant Abigail Ireland puts it, “It’s so easy to get distracted and chase after every shiny new idea, so having the right people around you serves to keep you grounded and focused. Learning from those who’ve already walked the path is an excellent way to avoid making costly mistakes.” Mentors – why, where and how often? Mentorship is all about forming a relationship based on mutual passion. This is a two-way street – we can all learn from one another on an ongoing basis. The things you learn can also help you to gain satisfaction in what you do, and you may not have even realized that you could be more satisfied! If you think you need a mentor, then it’s never too early to start searching. For Tom Passmore and Sophie Walker, co-founders of online waste management platform Disposal, this was a familiar situation. “Before Disposal,” says Tom, “we were both office admin workers. Now we were expected to have shareholder meetings, board meetings, and strategy sessions. Then we were expected to understand online marketing, HR, payroll, and insurance.” Tom and Sophie were able to fill these gaps and they were also able to solve many other problems with the help and guidance of their mentors. There are plenty of examples of young leaders who needed help. Before you start looking for a mentor, consider what it is you really need out of the relationship. Base your search off of that, and be honest when you connect with potential mentors. Why are mentors essential?

When a business continues to grow, you face a lot of challenges and you need a mentor for guidance. Mentors help startups connect with right people at the right time and their help takes you from milestone to milestone.

Mentors do more than just giving advice, once your mentor gets to know your skills, talents, and vision – he acts as a confidant that you can unload your problems with.  He’ll listen, help you dissect exactly what’s bothering you, and provide support as you both think of solutions together.

Only your close people like friends and family will love and care for you they will give you the best shot of enthusiasm. But no one can ask you a harder question and cannot tell you that your ideas probably won’t work. A right mentor at your side can approach your problems and questions without any emotional baggage, you’ll have access to a wealth of valuable skills and experience which helps you through the tougher decisions.

What will you expect from a mentor?

Mentorship is a long-term relationship. A mentor needs to have excellent skills and experiences to help the person being mentored, as well as have a good personality.  The best mentor knows how to make you feel both at ease and so uncomfortable you want to crawl out of your own skin.
